You can but it can be a bit tricky getting cabling past joists without a lot of holes, it depends which way the joists run, and if there is a space below. Also I would not attempt to fit them in a lath and plaster ceiling, you'll regret it!!

More importantly, there are a load of new regulations regarding fitting of downlights, You will have to be very careful. Is your property in the floor above? how deep is the void? are the lights open or sealed fireproof type. Is there ventilation?? If it's in a bathroom there are even more restrictions on what you can fit and where.

If you have coving you can route cables around this. By cutting 60mm holes with a good hole cutter.number each cut out and the wall(behind coving) with an individual number.Route cables around coving and in and out each light you have cut in ceiling. You may want to invest in some electrical fishing rods or use a bit of mini trunking lid to fish to each spot light.Once all cables are around you can plug the cut outs back in the coving with plaster.once dry, sand, fine fill and paint.
Try to find out where your joists are and what way they run before you start and when you buy your spot lights get adjustable versions,as the cut out size is normally big enough to get your hand through to above the ceiling.

Of course you can, if you choose the right ones with small transformers, most are, and use a good cutter, the only problems you may have is the route of the cables, you may have to drill through the joists.

You will need to put a false ceiling (MDF / Hardboard) on your existing ceiling (so it doesnt work if your ceiling is already low) The lights go inbetween the real and the fake ceilings.
(how many more times can I get "Ceiling" into one answer !!)

Cut the hole and the light has clips that depress on insertion, opening up when in place to hold the light up, dead easy.

No you have to do them from above as the transformers that are attached need somewhere to sit.......
