Is your whole neighborhood over run with rats, or is it just your backyard? If it is just your backyard, I'm bettting that you leave dogfood outside for your dogs. If you are, that is what is attracting the rats. Remove the dogfood, and the rats should disappear. They will move on and find greener pastures. I once had a neighbor in a subdivision I lived in who had this problem. No one saw the rats until it snowed one night and when the rear floodlights were turned on, there were dozens of rats running around. The whole neighborhood freaked out. Neighbor removed the dog food and the rats promptly left.

Good luck with your problem.

How about a cat? Ours kills them all the time. We live in the country and rats are a common problem. She spends a lot of time outside hunting them down. I don't know of any safe poisons to use. We wouldn't use them either because we have pets and kids.

We haven't had any come into the actual living area of our home, but they could get in through your roof though, if it has any holes or openings in it. That happened to us. After we moved in we noticed a small opening along the rain gutter and sure enough there were a few rats in our attic that had been killed during the fumugation (which is standard with every home purchase in CA). Don't want to scare you, but check your attic and roof out. It would be fine to lay traps and poison up there, of course. .

If you want the best solution anywhere, here it is. Coca-cola. If you put some out in a plate the rats will drink it and die of indigestion. Rats can neither burp nor toot, so the excess gas does them in. Take care and give that little dog a squeeze from me! The big one too.

Some dogs are natural ratters. And if they are after them they may be the type. The best way to get rid of them is to poison them but anything you lay out your dogs will get into. Call an exterminator and they may have some solutions.

perhaps you additionally could make like a compost pile type element. Throw some (older) culmination and vegetables right into a pile close to the backyard and spot in the event that they simply eat those. I have no thought if that could artwork, in spite of the fact that it could. additionally, you may get those stay traps and then launch them in the woodland or comparable (if unlawful in the city and you do not prefer to threat it).
