Obviously, it's important that other people *know* your name. That's a given.

However, if you are alone with only one other person, is it important to you to hear them say / address your name during everyday conversation?

Personally, I don't like it when someone addresses me by name. I don't dislike my name, I just dislike being addressed by it. If I'm the only other person around, at the time, what is the need to address me by my name? If there are others around, then yeah, it's necessary, but otherwise, what's the point?

As far as I'm concerned, there's only one reason to use someone's name when they're around. To get their attention. Some people use that as a tool to control conversation. By using your name, they break your train of thought and bring the conversation back around to where they want to go. Personally I find it tactical and manipulative.

I've been called alot of names other than the one on my birth certificate...And sometimes, my own name sounds better...Other times, a nick-name can be pleasant...I've acquired those too...But names are something were addressed as so we know when it is us who is being addresssed. Be proud of your name, even if people make fun of it....Or take the necessary means to change it. It's only a name, that is all.

I always thought that was a little strange myself. I don't need to be reminded who I am and neither should the other person participating in the conversation. It makes me uncomfortable and I'm not exactly sure why.
You're right- there is no point to doing it.

I certainly agree, that also bothers me when im on the phone..they know they are already talking to me, but they insist on saying your name, instead of say hey lets go, or just make your statement. This goes along with someone always saying your first and last name.

I dislike it when I introduce myself as Elizabeth and I am automatically called Liz or Beth or Betty.

I like to hear my name. In fact, I get into spats with my boyfriend who seems to only want to call me "honey" and "sweetie" instead of using my name. I really like it when I actually hear him utter my name from his lips.

Doesn't make a difference to me. My husband rarely calls me my name, though he does address me as mom, hunny, lovey, etc.
