The Treaty of Versailles (1919) was the peace treaty which officially ended World War I between the Allied and Associated Powers and the German Empire.

The main points of the Treaty of Versailles, after World War I, were:

>> Germany was to accept responsibility for starting the war
>> She was to pay reparations (compensation) to her former enemies totalling £6,500,000,000
>> Germany lost territory to France, Poland and Belgium. The result of this was that several million Germans now found themselves living in different countries
>> Germany’s overseas colonies were given to other countries especially Britain, France and Japan
>> The German army was to be restricted to 100,000 men
>> No tanks, aircraft, submarines or heavy artillery were permitted in Germany

No wonder, Germans have feeling of bitterness for Brits.

j4mes_bond25 has it wrong with the Germans being angry with the Brits over the Treaty of Versailles. Lloyd George, the then British PM, was adamant that Germany's reparations should be kept to a minimum so that their economy could recover quickly. This is turn would allow Germany to regain its place as one of Britain's main trading partners (as it had been before WWI) and therefore stimulate the British economy. Unfortunately for everyone the French, under Georges Clemeceau, had their way and Germany was presented with crippling reparations.

USA, UK, France and Russia divided up the German colonies, Austro-Hungary and the Ottoman empire for themselves

the Versailles Treaty also led to the formation of the League of Nations

The treaty of versailles punished germany so aggressively that it was only a matter of time before a manipulative leader like hitler persuaded this people that felt so hard done by to fight back. It was why the Allies emphasised germany's rehabilitation after WW2 instead, so she would prosper and be a peaceful ally.

The warring nations all signed a peace treaty. Germany got the short straw, so to speak, because France wanted to punish them severely for the trouble that they caused. The reparation payments would push Bill Gates into bankruptcy.

a treaty to ww1 was signed. however only the allies attended so the peace was unfair. USA wanted a peace that was not too harsh on german becuase they wanted to retreat to a future of isolation, not needing to fight in europe. UK wanted a harsh peace, but Lloyd George didnt want to cripple germany becuase they needed them as a buffer against the growing communism. France wanted a harsh peace for example they wanted 46billion pounds of reperations to pay for war damage. USA also wanted their loans from the war repayed so they wanted money paid to the allies from germany too

in treaty of versailles, all the nations decided that the war was germany's fault and they held the germans responsible. germans had to agree to pay them.
