I'd choose a blockbuster. Not for the money (though that's not a bad reward, hehe), but just for the fun of being able to take a huge budget and go all out making a fun movie.

Well since I'm not already rich, I'd make the blockbuster. With the returns on that, I could easily afford to make a moving thought-provoking film later (and actually EAT during the process)
:)

I would argue that the two are not mutually exclusive. Not all 'deep' films are flops and not all blockbusters are shallow. Consider "Schindler's List", "Saving Private Ryan", or "Howard's End", all box office successes AND thought provoking films.
However, if I have to choose I would say blockbuster, because that then gives you the money and the influence to make the 'deep' film.

I'd make the blockbuster first because then I would have enough money to make all the thought provoking films that I wanted!

The moving, thought provoking film. I hate blockbusters that have no point; I'd rather make a great, intellectual movie that didn't make a ton of money than a big crap storm that makes me millions.

I would make a thought provoking drama. Examples being:12 Angry Men or Shawshank Redemption for the simple fact that maybe you are not making the money now but will get you attention to make the big pictures. Thats how George Lucas, Ron Howard, and Ivan Rietman got their fame.

Do what some directors (and most actors) do. Make the blockbusters in order to pay for your own (untouched by Hollywood producers grubby greedy little hands) thought provoking film.
