I'm not a Doc, but, have had some colds...lol. I'm not really big on OTC type medicine's. I prefer doing the drink a ton of fluids, take vitamin C, get rest....you know the drill.

When myself or my kids are really congested I break out the good old Vick's' Vaporub. A little on the chest and a touch under the nose will really seems to help ease things up.

If it's really bad, a vaporizer or a pan of steaming water with some Vick's helps also.

One answerer mentioned going outside for a walk. I tend to agree, getting fresh air is important also. If you don't feel like going for a walk, just crack a window. In fact I usually keep a window cracked in my room even in the winter, just to keep some fresh air coming in.

Of course a shot of brandy, can help. I don't think it relieves the congestion, but , after a shot, I don't seem to care that I'm congested......lol

Best of Luck to You......

Guaifenesin

This is the main ingredient in Mucinex that others have mentioned. If you have some cough syrup, take a look at the ingredients because some have this medicine in them.

Personally, I like the hot steam vaporizer with Vicks in the medicine cup. Works wonders, but makes the room kind of smell.

If you can get to a doctor, a cough medicine with codeine in it will knock it right out, but, if you have to buy over-the-counter, anything with the word "tussin" in the name should work. Don't spend top dollar for brand names - store brand is just as good, it's all the same stuff (read the labels, you'll see). Talk to the pharmacist at any store, they can help you and make sure you're not taking any other meds that would conflict.

Vicks VapoRub medicated vapors begin to work immediately to relieve your cough. VapoRub is applied externally, so it doesn't interact with other medication the way pills can.

VapoRub is not likely to cause drowsiness or jittery side effects. Since VapoRub is a topical cough medicine, it may be an alternative for diabetics looking for an alternative to oral cough medicines that may contain sugar.

A walk outside will loosen the congestion, causing you to cough it up, or expelling it by causing your nose to run.

What she said, mucinex is the best decongestant, but remember to drink LOTS of water with it, for it to work properly.

Also, do you have access to a steam room? That helps a lot.

The ones I've found to work best are Mucinex or Robitussin.

Vick's vapor rub--been used in my family for generations. Rub on chest or put in pan of steaming water.
Out of your cup-board: cloves in steaming water.(I like cinnamon & ginger as well)
