There have been differing reports on whether it was a helicopter or a small plane that struck the building, sending debris raining down and unleashing what witnesses described as a giant fireball.

A Fire Department spokeswoman says the aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building.

The building is described as a 50-story condominium tower. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than a million dollars.

An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick luxury high-rise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.

Whether anyone was injured was not known, and it was unclear if the crash was an act of terrorism. The FBI is looking into this matter. There shouldn't be any other type of aircraft in that particular area,'' FAA spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said in a telephone briefing with reporters.

Officials say it's too early to say what type of aircraft was involved.

Yes they are now saying that they think it was a helicopter and that it was just a random act. I heard that the fire dept. already had the fire contained and it only affected one floor. ABC.com is covering it too. I really feel sorry for New York. They just seem to be the target for some reason.

They say it was a helicopter or small airplane. It was not an act of terrorism, because witnesses say the craft sounded like it was having engine trouble.
