Both acids and bases are suitable for cleaning and used in common household products. Which one you use depends on the job.

In general, bases are good for greasy stains and acids are good for inorganic stains. i.e. Bases break down oils so they would be good for cleaning up greese and fat. Hard water spots are alkaline, so an acid cleaner works best.

Depends on what you're cleaning. Vinegar is great for glass and getting mildew smell out of laundry, baking soda is great for polishing cutlery and getting laundry clean and soft. Mix them together (one at a time in a drain) and the chemical reaction cleans the drain out!
