my husband mainly uses his billy cook roping saddle but he also has one of the Austrailian Stock saddles as well. He loves it and says it is the most comfortable one but his other one os new and he wants to get it broke in. For me I prefer western saddles, but I run barrels and my saddle for that is very comfy. The only con against the auusie saddle might be the price but they are well worth it as far as comfort and duribility.

I've heard from multiple sources that it hurts like hell to get tossed off of one. The hard "wings" that are suppose to hold your thighs in place hurt when you make an unplanned flight from the saddle. Personally, I think the Aus Stock saddles are hideous, however that's just cosmetic and they may be a joy to sit in.

Have you looked into an endurance trail saddle? They are very light and made of synthetic material, so it sits you closer to the horse. Also they do not have a horn to get in your way even though they look just like a western saddle. I ride english myself and when I go on the trail, I take this saddle instead of my leather english one. It's very relaxing and comfortable with plenty of added security an english saddle doesn't provide without the nuisance of a horn in the way. Also you can buy a pair of endurance trail stirrups, which are wider and support more of your foot with a great thick cushion of a shock absorber built into the stirrups, at least an inch thick. They're great.

Also, look for Trooper patrol saddles (maybe on ebay?), which are often used by mounted police. My trainer is also head of a volunteer police posse and she swears by these, however they are hard to come by and she only has one. She says its the most comfortable saddle she's ever ridden in.

I hope you find the right saddle for your needs. Good Luck!!

The australian stock saddle is great if you're breaking a fizzy horse in! I had to train one really fizzy mare this year and she used to buck alot so in an english saddle I felt quite insecure. The australian ones have things that stick out holding your thighs down so it's very hard to deseat you, the result being a more confident rider and as a result calmer horse. I personally feel that it and the western are a bit heavy for long term use and so I prefer the english saddle for weight and versitility if you want to jump too.

i loved mine until i started to grow out of it. find a tack shop that sells Australian saddles. they have large thigh rolls that help to keep you in the saddle. these saddles are made in much larger seat sizes because you sit in a different place. you sit a little farther back and your legs sit a little forward. they can be very comfortable. make sure that you get one that is broken in already or one that can be broken in easily and one that has a lot of thick padding in the seat. it really takes a special person to ride in one. ask your tack shop if they will accept a exchange or a return within 30 days if the saddle just does not fit you. These saddles have the option of a horn or no horn. i personally prefer and English saddle or a saddle seat saddle because that is what I ride in most of the time. but definately check out the Australian stock saddles.

I prefer english, but I have used an Australian stock saddle. Its nice, I'd rather ride in that than western if I can't use my english saddle. Its my husbands and he won't use anything else.

Australian Stock saddles are designed for comfort and a long haul, they would make really nice trail saddles.
