would like to know what it may be without having to bring it to a dealership...

I don't know if you have any ability with repairs for your own car, but you can go to a discount parts store (AutoZone, O'Reilley's etc) and they can retrieve the codes usually at no cost.
With that information, obtain a repair manual and perform proper diagnostics of the failed circuit or system. Don't automatically assume that there is a component failure. It could be just a poor connection, or a broken wire or (?).
AFTER the repairs are made, ask them to turn the light off for you.

Try replacing your gas cap. Could be old. That is the most common. Might have a small leak also somewhere. Both are no big deal

Gas needs to be in the tank to start.
