Win 98 was most popular from 1999 to 2002 as far as i can remember. And i feel it is the most stable ever. But a bit slow now compare to Win ME and WinXP. Now most of my customer is moving to Window XP Sp2 with firewall.. Not the best, but with anti virus, anti spyware etc, should keep you going for some time. Next year, Window Vista coming out. Only original please.

Depends on the situation:
More businesses are stilling running Windows 2000, because of its extra security. Many older business applications still run only on Windows NT. It is preferred over 2000 for running production equipment in manufacuring sites.
Homes are more likely to have Windows XP (Home or Pro). Any computer shipped in the last 4-5 years is probably XP, but there are still many older ones running Windows 98.
I even have a hundred or so PCs in test labs at the site I support that run Windows 95 because they need the ability to run completely in DOS mode from some applications.
So it depends on the environment.

As of right now, it's gotta be xp. Overall... I would still say xp because technology has advanced... more people purchasing computers and stuff in the last several years.
We'll see how windows vista works out... im running it on one of my computers, and I really like it so far.
