Yes every item in the task bar is part of an process that's running. If you do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on the processes tab you can usually work out which process is related to each icon for example itunes.exe is ITunes if you look in the Mem Usage column that's how much memory is being used. in the CPU column it shows the drain being put on the CPU. If none of the processes are doing anything the CPU usage will sit around zero.
Unless you have a slow PC or not much RAM or you are using memory hungry programs you shouldn't notice too much. To end any of the processes just select it from the list and hit end process

It can do as it is generally the programs that you have elected to load at startup. You should be able to right click on most of the icons and then set the preferences in the related application to not to start with windows or not to launch in sytem tray.

attempt and eliminate as plenty junk as you are able to from the computer. Run disk cleanup or CCleaner and eliminate the fast-term documents, sparkling cache etc. If its fragmented, which would be a reason of the slowdown. no longer defragging for an prolonged time leads to extra beneficial possibilities of tension issues and lags ensuing in untimely hardware enhancements. Analze the stress and verify the fragmentation ranges. inadequate RAM may additionally slowdown operations.

Yes they do slow down your computer, but they won't affect your broadband connection. Yet, the icons on your desktop slow down your computer much more than those on your taskbar.

I recommend to clean up the register in order to improve your pc performances and get rid of malwares. A good program you can use is CCleaner http://j.mp/UrADZ5
It works like a charm.
