i Have been a gold prospector for 16 years. Once you see it you will never mistake it again. First if you are panning it will be small flakes pieces or specks. It will not move around in the pan like other material. The reason for this is that gold is 19 times heavier than water and the average material is only 7 times heavier. That is called its specific gravity. Quartz is 7 lead is 13 and gold is 19.3.if it doesn't move well go to test two. block it with your hand fools gold has a brassy green tint to it and may or may not have angular surfaces. but the shine will fade in the shade. Gold will shine in the shade still. next if it is gold you can scratch it with a pin or flatten it with a hammer. Pyrite crumbles. If it passes these tests you have gold. It should look a lot like the gold on jewelry.Gold prospecting is a fun and rewarding hobby . Here are some sights that you can learn more about gold mining. www. 49ermike.com is a site that you can see where gold may be close to you. They also have an informative forum.www.gpaa.com has a site with an active chat room where you can talk to miners ,they also have a large forum.www.goldgold.com is the site for the new 49ers a great club in California. Real gold is malleable, ie, you can hit it with a hammer and can be formed into a sheet. Iron pyrite = fools gold, will not.

Fool's gold will fracture into little cubes and gold will flatten out into thin sheets when hammered.

I've been surfing online more than 3 hours today seeking the answers to the same question, and I haven't found any interesting debate like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.

Pour on 2M hydrochloric acid , stir well and watch. If your "gold" is dissolving, sniff. If you can smell rotten eggs its fool's gold.
