If your lookin for "Fat Burning", than yes, a Fast ( uphill helps ) walk will get almost anyone into the Fat Burning pulse range. THis is how I do my aerobic exercise, it's more comfortable than running & easier on your joints. Don't be afraid to put your hands on Treadmill bars, it'll take some weight off your back if you have back-pain.

If your looking to do Cardio-Respiratory training ( to increase your fitness for sports or outdoor activity ) you'll want to do a Higher-pulse activity, & may want to consider jogging, but a strenous uphill walk will also accomplish this for most people.

I'm 21 years old, in good shape, & can still accomplish a good cardiorespiratory workout walking uphill on a treadmill at 3.5-4 mph. & prefer to most of the time.

So I'd say yes, unless your training for competitive sports, walking can accomplish almost anything running can.

WAlking is a lot better on your joints. But walking fast doesn't use the same muscles as jogging. WHen I workout I do both. FIrst I warm up walking slow then I speed walk. THen jog, to a run and then I sometimes sprint at the end. THis works out most of my legs. Whatever works for you is what you should do.

As some one already answered any excersize is good. Just figure out what works for you.

GOod luck.

The latest advice from doctors is that fast walking is as beneficial as jogging and may be better for your joints and bones. Jogging can rip up muscles, tear ligaments and cause unneeded stress to the body. If joggers are not conscientious about shoes, sports bras, pavement etc. they often receive bad injuries in the name of health. Fast walking creates the same cardiovasuclar tuneup that you need and you say that you can do it with no discomfort. Keep it up.

well sure ! since the jogging hurts !
you need to wait for your knee to heal totally

you can use an athletic band while jogging/ walking fast
