ALL running water is generated by water falling from a higher to lower elevation - which is why all rivers run toward the ocean (sea level).

Water wheels, tidal force generators and all water turbines in dams operate on the motion of water through a small area.

Current research is working on generators that operate on wave forces (up/down) and other 'passive' motions of the seas to generate electricity.

They have been doing that for 100 years. Old saw mills used to use water wheels to turn pullies and poewer their saws. Dams use the same thing, the presure of the lake forces the water through a narrow opening, the water turns the turbine (fancy water wheel) which turns the generator. . . . and your t.v. comes on.
