Portugal does have many orange trees in the south, where the weather is warmer, but that's not the one of the most important export product. Larger countries like Spain produce a lot more oranges than Portugal.
The main food export i think is olives. And bananas ,only in the island of Madeira.

If I remember it well, the name of the country ("Portugal") is still associated today with oranges in some Arabic speaking countries.

I think the word for "orange" in Arabic means both "Portugal" and "orange"! Or is it "portugal" that means both "Portugal" and "orange"?

(Maybe our Arabic speaking friends can give us a hand here! Anyone?)

This is not because Portugal is famous for its oranges (although they have quite good ones!), but because it is believed that Portuguese sailors took oranges with them - as a good supply of vitamin C, which can prevent scurvy! - on their voyages around Africa, the Middle and the Far East, during the "Discoveries" period, in the 15th and 16th Century. Oranges were an easy way to carry and provide that supply of Vitamin C. Not that the sailors were aware at the time that vitamin C could prevent scurvy, but they did know from their own experience that oranges (and fresh vegetables too!) could.

Hence, some of those areas peoples, who were seeing oranges for the very first time, associated "Portugal" with "oranges" and I believe that this association was absorbed by the(ir) language(s) and that this association still persists today.
