From The Answer Bank:

"You won't get a perfect black by mixing paints. You might manage something close by mixing blue and red and then adding a little yellow.

If the result is too green - add red.
If the result is too brown - add blue.
If the result is too purple - add yellow.

You will get best results if the blue is a turquoise blue (cyan=C), The red is slightly purplish (magenta =M) and the yellow is yellow (=Y). The colour printing process used for books magazines and newspapers uses these three colours to get all the colours visible on the page, but because a true black cannot be made, an extra ink (black =K) is also used. You will find the same CMYK combinations in ink-jet printers and colour laser printers."

Hope this helps!

If you have a dark purple, try adding some dark blue to it....

Otherwise, just add a bunch of stuff together until it gets to (almost) black. I don't know if there's an official way to make black - usually that's what you get after you pass brown when mixing lots of stuff.

Still, I think you'd have a better chance starting with dark purple, which is close to black to begin with.

The above poster is correct:
"In theory, mixing equal amounts of all three pigments should produce shades of grey, resulting in black when all three are fully saturated, but in practice they tend to produce muddy brown colors." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_colors

Yellow, Cyan (blue), and Magenta (red) are considered the primaries in this case.

I paint, with acrylics and watercolors. I know that if you mix the acrylic colors Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue (or a really dark blue and some brown - preferably a darkish brown), you'll get a color really close to black.

cheat. nobody got anywhere by following the rules. If it is a line, use a black marker pen, 4b pencil, whatever. mixing paint won't give you a convincing black. do you have a lighter? burn the support to make it black. In every great artist is an innovator. be that person.

You should get a black with red, blue and yellow, but the shade will depend on the amounts and which type of those colours you use. Try it out and adjust with yellow if it's too purple, red if it's too green and blue if it's too orange.

add a little of each of ALL the other colors and you will get black (in art black is the presence of all colors) Good Luck!
