The best thing about Moore was his bemusement with his stardom from doing the Bond movies. I remember interviews with him after his heyday and he was always quite aware that he was a Movie Star without being particularly talented. Seemed like a nice, level-headed bloke, and he DID appear to have fun as Bond (oh, right, driving fast cars and fooling around with babes in and out of bikinis is SO demanding... :-)
Me, I was always a Sean Connery fan, till about a month ago. My wife and I watched the Stanley Donen film "Arabesque" on TMC, and Robert Osborne mentioned that it was the second Donen thriller, originally to have included the same star as the first, which was "Charade" starring Cary Grant. So we made a point of watching Charade, and here's Cary Grant as a suave, elegant spy -- in short, he's doing the best Bond ever, and it wasn't even a Bond movie.
So I've been ruined ever since -- I've been imagining a youngish Cary Grant, roughly at the age he was in say "Suspicion" or maybe a bit after "Arsenic and Old Lace," but doing all the Bond films. Just think of Cary Grant's trademark voice saying, "Oh, bad luck, Goldfinger, this is a Slazenger one, and you play a Slazenger 7, and since we are playing strict rules of golf, you lose the hole and the match." (So as long as I'm thinking it, you might as well have Sydney Greenstreet as Auric Goldfinger -- imagine the exchange on the laser table: "Do you expect me to talk?" "Why no, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die! By gad, sir, I do love a man who thinks he's expected to talk when he's expected to die...")
On the down side, Cary Grant was very likely too much the gentleman to have said, about Grace Kelly or Eva Marie Saint, that the collar and cuffs matched...
Which really begs another Yahoo question -- who was the best actor who never played a famous role?

Roger Moore was the best James Bond??? Now that I have picked myself up off the floor from laughing....
Let's make it clear. The VERY BEST JAMES BOND EVER was Sean Connery. Closely followed by Pierce Brosnan. Roger Moore was OK but as someone else here said, if only he could act. Timothy Dalton should NEVER have been given the gig. And poor george Lazenby must be kicking himself (is he still around??)

Sean Connery was and still remains the best, the original James Bond. Nobody comes anywhere near him and in line, Roger Moor comes a poor last.

I have to go for Pierce Brosnan. My argument being that if he was the first James Bond he probably would be considered the best by the majority. It's just that everyone remembers Sean Connery as the first. I thought that Roger Moore was a little cheesy!

Sean Connery was the best James Bond. Pierce Brosnon is a close second. Roger Moore falls short of the mark. But Sean Connery was probably before your time, and who bothers to fiddle with the history of something right?

Sorry, Sean Connery was better than Roger Moore. He portrayed better the charming assassin of the novels. This new Daniel Craig looks pretty good as well. The worst one was George Lazemby but I guess that isn't a secret to anyone.

Undoubtedly. Humour, sophistication, wit, great gadgets and a total legend with the ladies. Everything a Bond should be. And English, of course. The Spy who Loved Me is one of the greatest Bond films ever. The one liner to Barbara Bach when she is grinding the gears in the white van when Jaws is trying to kill them is possibly the best ever-"can you play any other tunes?"Get a load of that one Connery fans!!!
