Unlike the drunkard who knows that drinking solves no problems, but reconciles one to them unsolved, the skeptic fears to become satisfied with second-best. She wants to put an end to her skepticism in such a way that the dreaded possibility of error is rooted out, known to be conquered, and answered with finality, not simply submerged and forgotten or made to seem innocuous. As Benson Mates put it, "we do not want merely to 'get over' [skepticism], whether by a natural deterioration or by some sort of therapy or 'treatment'. On the contrary, we require a more or less rational explanation of exactly where and how the skeptical train of thought goes wrong."

Sentence #2:
She became promiscuous after discovering her husband was homosexual, therefore she felt that sleeping with other guys would help her with the pain.

White House and had been on the staff of a large Baptist church. Starting out with great potential, this "all-American" guy ended up deeply mired in pornography-and leading a double life.
The signs were a gradual deterioration. He became secretive and angry. As Jack regressed in behavior, he began to withdraw from the children and me. Slowly he lost the ability to think and feel. [I watched] him lose his soul.

Sentence one is rather painful to read with all the "she"s in it.

"Her life is full of problems and difficulties, so to escape and overcome them, she turns to drinking." Simple is good.

"She found out her husband was homosexual, so she became promiscuious, feeling that sleeping with other guys would ease the pain."

Hope this helps.
