Ohm - The unit of resistance to the flow of an electric current.

A unit of electrical resistance, as in the equation V=IR, where V is the applied DC voltage, I is the current in Amperes, and R is the resistance in Ohms.
Ohms are also used as units of impedance -- like resistance, but for AC voltages and currents. The equation above is identical for AC but with impedence used rather than resistance.
FYI: color codes for carbon composition resistors.
black = 0; brown=1; red=2; orange=3; yellow=4; green=5; blue=6; vilolet=7; grey=8; white=9
silver=10% tolerance
gold=5% tolerance
no tolerance marking = 20% tolerance
If the resistor has black brown red then silver it is 10x10 to the 2nd power Ohm unit with 10% tolareance, i.e. 1,000 Ohms plus or minus 100 Ohms...

An ohm is a measure of how hard it is for electricity to get through a material, also called the electrical resistance. An electrical resistance of 1 ohm means that it takes 1 volt of electric force to push 1 ampere of electric current through the material. If you apply 2 volts to this same material, 2 amperes of current will flow. This is called Ohm's Law.

Things that are good conductors of electricity have low resistance and perhaps only a small fraction of an ohm. Things that are good electrical insulators have high resistance and very many ohms, perhaps millions.

Named after Georg Simon Ohm, Ohm's Law deals with the relationships between the Electromotive force Voltage (E), Current (I) and Resistance (R), in an electrical circuit. The law is E=I x R.

Pronunciation: 'Om
Function: noun
Etymology: Georg Simon Ohm
: the practical meter-kilogram-second unit of electric resistance equal to the resistance of a circuit in which a potential difference of one volt produces a current of one ampere
Which is to say in English: an ohm is how much effort it takes electricity to push through a wire. An analogy would be how much effort it takes a spoon to push through chocolate pudding to the other side. It has to be chocolate of course for Joe Cool to try.

Ohm is a way to measure electrical resistance. Some things, like metal, conduct. Others, like rubber, resist.

In its simplest form: the resistance to the flow of electricity.
