If it is the first time you've ever had this problem, you should call your gynecologist just to make sure that's what it is. It is not a serious condition at all just very uncomfortable. If you choose to not go to the doctor you can get the medication at any drugstore........

A yeast infection is not usually serious. In fact, the issue will usually resolve itself, but of course you can still use over the counter products to help the healing process along. Yeast infections can occur from wearing too tight of clothing, taking baths instead of showers, a pH imbalance, or perhaps you are taking antibiotics for something else which caused the secondary infection? They can also be spread sexually (kind of rare, but it can happen. No, men can not get yeast infections but they can transfer it if they have sex with one woman who has a yeast infection and then that said man has sex with another woman). Also, don't douche... this increases the chance of a yeast infection (what most people don't know is that yeast in normal in your vaginal tract... it's called normal flora, but if you rid your body of this yeast it allows for other pathogens to enter the area and cause an infection; obviously there's more than one type of yeast, some of which cause infection and some of which don't...YOU NEED NORMAL FLORA). Yeast infections are uncomfortable- they cause itching and a burning sensation. Anyway, if it doesn't go away on it's own and OTC products don't work then schedule an appointment w/ your gyno. He/she can prescribe something stronger for you.

The first time you get one, or suspect you have one, you should go to your Doc, who will prescribe you medication. If you are someone who suffers from recurrent yeast infections, you will know when you get one, and can therefore buy the meds yourself from a pharmacy. But the first time, if you're not certain it is a yeast infection, you should go to your Doc. If you take something like Monastat or another OTC medication for yeast infections, but don't really have a yeast infection, you can make things A LOT worse...and you don't want to do that. Drink lots of cranberry juice though, it'll help with a yeast infection or a Urinary Tract Infection, which you could also have.

Vaginal yeast infection, or candidiasis, is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans. Candida are organisms normally found in the vagina in small numbers.
Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast that are often present in low numbers in the vagina. Pregnancy, antibiotics, and frequent exposure to semen over a short period of time can all lead to an overgrowth of these organisms.
Symptoms of yeast infection include:
Vaginal itching and irritation
Unusual vaginal discharge, often white and thick
Vaginal pain during intercourse
Burning sensation during intercourse
A variety of effective treatments are available from single-dose treatment to treatment courses of 3-7 days. Yeast infections can be treated and cured with antifungal medication, but if its your first one, Go see a doctor.

if you have never had one then it would be best to seek a doctors advice before using anything over the counter. Chance's are that it is just that a yeast infection but just to be one the safe side. You can get one from many things.
wearing tight panties-not cotton
antibiotics
or from your partner,

don't worry they are common and not a very serious thing

Calm down for pete's sake.

Go to the doctor. They need to make sure it is a yeast infection and not an STD. BIG difference.

You can get a yeast infection by taking an antibiotic or having sex with someone who has it---even men get it.

Yeasts are all around us, but you need a diagnosis first. There are other things can cause the symptoms. The treatment is Rx drugs in any event.

A yeast infection is mostly really annoying.

If you are really worried, go to your doctor. Yes, it is possible to treat it yourself.
