There are the funny ones like, "I told you I was sick."
There are the funny names like "I. B. Dead."
There are the ones I found on http://members.fortunecity.com/panforum/compend/c040105.html like: In a cemetery in England:
"Remember man, as you walk by.
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, so shall you be.
Remember this and follow me."
...To which someone replied by writing on the tombstone:
"To follow you I'll not consent.
Until I know which way you went . " (I love that!)

A few years back, though, nearly everyone in my neighborhood was making graveyards of their yards and had a lot of those same quotes. I painted cereal boxes gray and steadied them with bricks inside. The epitaths I had on them were simple-- I looked up my heroes of the past, starting with authors of scary books, and put their actual birth and death years. That makes a great family project, too. Plus, you can draw on related pictures (like a Raven for Edgar Allen Poe and a bat for Bram Stoker) and add a brief description of the person's contribution. If you don't make them as a family, then have kids find you the name of the author of a book or other person by giving them a clue from the tombstone, then give them a treat! It'll make sure they go through the graveyard, too!

That sounds like fun! How about putting a few heads of skeletons, scary pumpkins, and cobwebs scattered sporadically in the graveyard. Also, adding a rubber hand coming out of the dirt by a tombstone would be really cool looking too! Oh and you could put a couple of flying bats in a few trees.
On the headstones you can have them read:
"You are next"
"Will be back"
"Jason dearest"
"Turn back"
"Vacancy"
"Buried alive"
Happy Halloween! :)

Actually, if you go to a store that sells Halloween decorations, they sell headstones that already have sayings on them. Like "Here lies.........Barry D'alive" (that's a good one). Or what I did last year was I bought the blank headstones and wrote in the names of my family members. Make sure to put up spider webs too. Have fun.
