That rings a bell for me too. I have some recollection the animation was similar to the Care bears. Wasn't it called the Wuzzles or something like that? I think there was also an elephant / kangaroo mix - eleroo???? I am sure there were soft toys etc you could buy?
Ummmm - this has really got me thinking now!!

O yes, this was called the Wuzzles from the wonderful land of Wuz, Bumble-lion, Hoppo(pottumus), Rhinokey and Eleroo were the name of the four main characters.
