people who self harm are crying out for help and pity

Instinct is fight or flight. And running is not always an option. Or there comes a time when there is no where to run. Some figure out that if you fight the self most will stop fighting you.
Most of my self-harm was through anger. Anger that stemmed from a childhood of mainly emotional abuse. People forget to look at the world through the eyes of a child when dealing with children too often. Too many believe children are like fish. Do they feel pain? OF COURSE THEY BLOODY DO!
So i self-harmed to release. And not wanting to release on others. Oh, i tried that too. It was at least something that would get me some sort of social circle. Get into a good fight. But it never brought release from the emotional turnmoil.
Why do people do things that they know are bad for them? It's no different with self harm.
Have a nice day.

For every scar I have there is probably a different reason.

For most of us, I think it's about changing what we are feeling - we have such deep seated emotional pain, and with self harm we try to change it to a physical pain.

It's not about attention seeking, although most people who self harm would benefit from some attention. For most of us, it is a very secret, hidden activity.

It does go against the instinct to avoid injury - it takes a lot of courage to do, but for a lot of us, we ahve suffered much worse outrages against the body.

Yes..it does go against it..But millions get tattoos! They know it may sting a bit...but they will have a constant reminder of a time when they felt emotions they either liked or disliked. People self harm to displace guilt or make it feel as if they are breaking even with the bank of remorse they carry around....And it does not work. Emotional self harm is also detrimental, but those who do it are merely trying to find peace in one way or another...

People self harm to get rid of overwhelming feelings or to feel something. At times, it becomes too difficult to handle the feelings inside and cutting helps relieve the anxiety and pain. It releases endorphins, the body's natural pain killer, which makes the feelings deminish. Also, it turns the emotional pain into something that is easier to understand, physical pain. usually the cutter has been abused in some way and doesn't know how to reach out for help.

Many people who self harm claim that the physical pain that they experience is preferable to the emotional pain they are going through.

The cutting distracts their mind from their troubles and gives them something physical to focus on.

Often it a cry for help as they want others to notice their unhappiness from their scars, although some people are very private about it.

Cynical people may believe it is a way of juvenile attention seeking.

There is link between people who enjoy the sensation of pain (those who have many tattoos or piercings) and self harm.

to release anger, stress or get even with a sense of guilt(self punishment). or when you feel helplessness it's something that's still under your control.

like sometimes i mad punch the wall with my bare knuckles.until it bruises. but maybe the pain brings endorphine (pleasure) so it can cover up the negative feelings inside.

when one self-harm. i think the subject often carries a certain amounts of self-hatred and self abandonment so carrying out self punishing behaviors.

apparently when the pain of whatever is troubling them gets too much, when they self harm,by cutting their arm for example, the physical pain releases the pain that they feel inside.
other people self harm as a form of mutilation because they feel bad about themselves, that they are worthless.
people who do this need our love and support to get through the terrible time in their lives.

it's not necessarily a form of attention seeking it can be a geniune cry for help a way of trying to reflect the pain they are feeling internally by expressing it externally
