Yes they can put drugs in your IV that take the edge off the pain.
Worked for me!

Yes, they can give you something through your IV, but it can pass through to your baby, and may make it unresponsive after birth, also it just takes the edge off, they can give it to you several times during labor, but each time it does less and less to help with the pain. I am pregnant with my third child, with my first I tried the drugs, but then got an epidural. With my second I got an epidural, because I was being induced. I don't like the way that I felt after wards though, so this time I know what to expect, with my last one, the doctor didn't have the epidural prescribed, so I got it at the last possible minute, and it didn't kick in all the way before I had her, so I felt everything, and it really wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. If you do decide not to get an epidural, they do use a local numbing agent down below. You can still feel all of the pressure, and it does hurt, but if you go in and expect it to hurt, it really won't be as bad as you expect it to be. Good luck!

I did not want an epidural because I wanted complete control and I dont like the idea of anything in my spine so my doctor put some kind of narcotic in my iv and it worked for a while. It allowed me to get some much needed rest and even a little sleep during the labor but it wore off by the time that I was pushing and they would not give me any more because they wanted me to push effectively. I thought that day was the worst pain ever until my second pregnancy.
My 2nd pregnancy I had no meds at all and when I compare the two, the meds did really help.

Yes they can give you IV pain meds every hour but I would recommend the epidural compared to the pain of labor a small cathider in the back was nothing

Yes i got three doses of Fentanoyl (sp?) and it helped for about an hour the first time, 40 mins the second time and about 20 mins the third time. If you are worried about pain I strongly suggest the epidural. It will not harm the baby.

Yes there are so don't you worry. I was given nubain, which actually made me itch quite a bit. The doctors will know exactly which meds you can receive without any ill effects to your baby. Sometimes the baby will suffer some side effects such as drowsiness depending on what you get, the doctors just want to make sure that you don't have anything that will suppress the lungs and cause your baby to struggle with his/her breathing. You will do great. Don't forget to read up on c-sections too, just to be informed and prepared. i tell this to pregnant women because I went in for my first baby and ended up with a c-section and it can be scary if you don't know what is happening to you. Everyone has their own horror stories about their births but mostly their just embelished. You will do great and so will your baby. Congratulations.

Get a copy of the book "The Birth Partner" by Simkin. You'll learn a lot about the different medications and procedures, including the risks and benefits of each one. Then you can discuss it with your caregiver and make an informed decision. It is very possible to prepare yourself so that you can cope without meds as well. I've done it 3 times without any medication.

I am 18 weeks pregnant with my first child so I personally don't know, but all of my family has had epidurals and they thought they were amazing and the pain was very minimal if any. My mom swears by them and wouldn't have done it without one.

They do have something to just take the edge off. They are given to you through IV. You can get up and walk if you have these but you can not if you get an epidural.

They can give you stadol which works for like 20 mins, and morphine, which works for a while. But they will limit how much they give you. So after you've had the max amount you wont be able to have anything else. Epidural is the way to go!

epidural numbs the body so you longer feel but they do not make you high and loopy like they potray on tv but you can also get laughing gas while in labor I dont know if this helped me but I kept trying LOL!!!! if you have a c-section u can also be put under. my vote is for the epidular and if you are in back labour the needle going in feels SOOOOOO good
