The capital letter distinguishes something. For example, it tells us it is the first word of a new sentence, or a person's name, etc.

There are lower and upper case letters because of one great man, by the name of Charlemagne (ca. 740-814). He was king of the Franks from 768–814 and responsible for many great reforms. One reform was literacy. He opened schools and educated many, allowing them to be taught to read and write. At that time Latin was written all in upper case letters--it was difficult to read, took up a lot of paper and ink, and took up more time. So, out of convenience, a new type was formed called Carolingian Minuscule--i.e. lower case letters. It was developed for the mere reason of saving time, energy, paper, and ink. We still use it today. Why? For the same reasons--it is convenient and easy.
