I am having a panic attack, I have Lorazepam 1MG. However, it is expired as of 09/26/2006 -- do you think I could safely take one to calm me down?

I have dealt with panic since I was poisoned with meth by my ex who tried to kill me. I was hospitalized... it has effected my life almost daily since that August four years ago. I have learned how to deal with them. When I start to shake and breathe heavy, the heart rate shoots up I attempt to calm myself, but I do have to take meds about once or twice a month to calm my nerves. So, I wasn't sure if I could take the meds since they were expired and thanks for helping me.

I know your panic attack has ceased (at least I hope) by this point. But I am a bit disturbed by the people telling you that meds are fine after the expiration date. Pills are not the same as foods. Foods have a "best by" date. Pills have an expiration date or use by.This is because the chemicals in the pills have a definite point at which they start to either lose their potency or start to change chemically into something completely different. Your pills were only a few weeks over the date, so they are most likely ok, but for those telling you they are good up to a year after they expire are playing with fire. Most meds will just cease to work, but some can actually become harmful to your body. If at all possible, you are better off throwing out all expired medications and replacing them with fresh when needed. I know this isn't exactly possible in the middle of a panic attack.

Likewise, storage of your medications can greatly effect how in tact they are. For instance, if you don't store the pills in a dry location out of sunlight, heat, and environmental changes, the chemicals can start to degrade sooner. Therefore, medications should never be stored in a bathroom that you shower in or near a stove in the kitchen.

I've worked in the health field and seen the adverse reactions that can occur first hand. Be careful and good luck with the anxiety. I've only had 1 panic attack in my life and it was not an experience I want to have again.

The most effective way of dealing with panic attacks is through breathing. Count 8 to inhale, hold the air and exhale on an 8 count. Do this at leas 10 times. Good luck!

YeS... Expiration dates on medicines dont necessarily mean that the medication simply stops working after that date... Legally everything has to have an expiration date on it... Even canned goods when previously one was not needed because they last forever until opened. However, new laws say they have to, Id take it. You'll be fine.

I used to have panic attacks.... B vitamins help anxiety and there are also other herbs and supplements you can take for calming and aid in sleep..Look it up on the web....www.curezone.org is a good one to check out... I am not too keen on taking prescription drugs they just mask symptoms and have side effects, may even long term effects...Anxiety is ugly but you can learn to control it it just takes time and commitment.... Learn as much as you can knowledge
is power!

Yes, you can use it. This stuff does not go off like food (and it's only a bit over date).

But because of the date it might not be as strong as you're used to.

Taking a good long walk while waiting for the pill's effect, will surely help.

That's not very out of date. So, it's ok to take one. Panic attacks are no fun. My mother had them. She would take a walk or even jog to calm herself as well as taking her medication. She calmed down and lost some weight both of which is good for you.

I really feel for you, dear. I know they are horrible.

Yeah, and it will probably work as well as new medicine. It's only two weeks past the date, and typically medicine begins to lose potency after the date.

Panic attacks really suck, don't they. Remind yourself that it will go away, and that it feels much worse than it really is.

A friend of mine who is a pharmacist told me that pills are good up to a year after exp. date.
