Eyeliner is, by nature, sort of harsh and wax-y -- and not too easy to manipulate in terms of light touch vs. heavy touch. You might try using shadow -- there are so many more shades and, with the right brush (very thin -- a liner brush, specifically, which you can find at Sephora), you can achieve the definition you want without having to "commit" to dark brown or black. You can smudge, too, which gives that "smokey" look without seeming to heavy. More options. Play around.

I have brown hair and blue eyes also. I enjoy a more natural look during the day. If I do wear eyeliner it's charcoal or brown. I tend to save the black for an evening out.

The purpose of eyeliner is to make your eyes pop.
I have blonde hair and a light skin tone so I use brown eye liner. I'm not that great at putting it on, and always seem to screw up when I put the black on. Lots of "non-goths" use black eyeliner.

generally shades of brown look good with blus eyes. I have blue eyes and strawberry blond hair and have tried blue eyeliner before and it looked ridiculous. I now use dark brown and it looks very natural.

Yes. I have hazel eyes and I have been wearing black eyeliner for years. I have tried other colors such as gray and brown but they never had the same effect of bringing out my eyes.

I am fair also... Personally I like to use a color liner instead of black.. you might want to try a slate color to compliment your eyes... and i only use liner on the top half lid (from the corner to over my pupil). Then i use a dark shadow to finish the look instead of liner. I think liner looks really harsh where shadow (gray, brown, blue, whatever) creates a softer more dramatic look.

any color should look good with blue eyes, but if you're worried about making it look too harsh, try lightly smudging your line(s) with your finger (or a q-tip) so it looks lightly put on, but not so light it's "invisible".
for the more natural look, i know magazines rave about wearing less makeup, but every time i've given it a try, i couldnt stand it. my face would look so bare that when i did put eyeliner on, people at my work would say "wow! you're wearing makeup today! you look good!". i say leave the "natural" look to girls in the magazines.
