Ok folks let someone who owns one step in and set things straight.
The older MB's are just like any other car on the market. If they are cared for they are very reliable. If they are not cared for then they will fall apart. Plain and simple.
The Mid 80's 300 series and the early 90;s "E" series wagons are built like tanks from a body point of view. There are several variants on the theme 5 cylinder non-turbo, 5 cylinder turbo, and 6 cylinder turbo. The best of the bunch were the 1986 and 1687 6 cylinder turbo. The engine is bullit proof. There were some minor problems with an exhaust particle trap but MB stepped up to the plate and fixed all of those problems.
The comment that the cars will cost you a fortune to maintain will depend upon how well they were taken care of.
I own three 87 turbo wagons for the family. All three were purchased used and I spent about $3000 on each to bring them up to my level of acceptability in appearance and performance. They all have over 325000 miles on them now.
I also own two other MB's a 1967 200D with over 800,000 miles on it and a 1972 280SL with both tops and a five speed transmission. The 280SL has just over 250000 miles on it.
I follow the maintenance schedule established for the 200D on all my vehicles. Every 3000 miles the oil and filters are changed. At 12000, 24000, 36000 and 48000 there are other services to be performed as well.
I change out parts before they fail on a preventative maintenance schedule that I developed in addition to the MB scheduled maintenance. For instance, At 60000 mile intervals I replace the waterpumps and any idler pullies and all belts. At 120000 mile intervals I replace the alternators and radiators. At 150000 mile intervals, I have the transmissions pulled and rebuilt and the turbos replaced. At 300000 mile intervals I have the engines rebuilt.
Every three months I have them detailed. Every one of my cars look like they just came off the showroom floor. Is it expensive to do this type of maintenance. Maybe, BUT I have the most reliable cars of anyone I know.
Most important of all, I have peace of mind that my family are riding in the safest and most reliable cars in the world because they are built to last and built to be safe and I take the time and money to keep them running to the best of my ability.

If you can do all your maintenance, tune up and some troubleshooting, old MB's are a good hobby. If you need reliable transportation day in and day out, you need to find something much newer. You're talking about 15 year or older cars here.

I would not purchase a mercedes that old, the maintenance and repairs alone will bankrupt you.
