I understand they have photographers, but what about small companies say in London, they couldnt send someone out to the north pole, or could they?? Hmmm? I always presumed that the pics on the internet where copywrited and if that is what they use then what about before internet, any light shed on this subject wouldbe greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch, Peter D.

There are sources such as Digital Images that sell cds of miscellaneous pics, these, once you buy them, are free to use within certain limits. They will contain all sorts of things, categorized by whatever group you purchased. For instance, you would look under "Animals" and then choose the rest of it by what you see there. (I realize penguins aren't 'animals' per se, but that's how they're categorized.) I have Art Explosion, which is 5 DVDs of miscellaneous clip art and hi-res pics as well as some low-res web-use pics. In current usage, if they are looking for a fairly small size image, you can always try Google Images. Sometimes you can find a non-copyright image that will work in the thousands you get from them (given time to hunt through them)

If they wanted to, I suppose they could just use any photo of a penguin from the internet, and then just trace over it on Adobe Illustrator. That's what I usually do anyway!
I suppose before they had the internet, there would still have been books and photos, that they could trace over and then photograph.

you are correct...photos are copyrighted, however, there are sites that have "royalty-free" images available for use at various prices (depending on the print size and resolution you need)...as a designer that's where i go when i need an image. i would do a search for royalty-free images and see what you comes up...like i said i could give you sites i use, but prices range from 50 - 500 dollars (US).

also, if you find an image on the internet you could always contact the photographer...sometimes there are images that they'll let you use as long as they're given the photo credit.

good luck!

If you do not want to tread on anyones toes or get into copyright regulation ballyhoo, the best advice I can give is for you to be original. If you are graphically inclined at all and have some artistic talent just go for it and try and come up with your very own Penguin or whatever!!

I'm a designer in Philadelphia so I constantly have to search for art and images for clients. We use www.gettyimages.com, www.corbis.com, or any other site for complex photography or illustration we don't have time to do in house. Search royalty-free images. (this is of course if you have a budget available) But royalty-free means you pay once and use the image indefinitely. Otherwise, find an image and illustrate yourself by using it as a guide, but stay away from clipart!

you can buy a membership to a stock photo site (photos.com, stockimage.com, etc) but if u want one, free image smx.hu is a great website. you have to make sure the image u select has no restirictions (some are listed not for use, photographers permission, etc) but the ones with no restrictions can be used anywhere and on anything.

You can either purchase photos from a stock art website, illustrate the penguin yourself, or go to your local zoo and take some photos yourself.
