mums, autumn joy sedum, aster, "subzero" pansies (hardy). These are most popular and hardy garden flowers. Most garden centers should carry them right now.

If you aren't too far from Framingham you may want to check out the New England WIldflower Society.

Their trails are open until Halloween, it might be worth checking out their plantings. It's sometimes easier to get a feel for a plant in the landscape than one in a small container in the nursery.

Fall Pansies, which really are not Fall Pansies, they just grow them later :0), Chrysanthemums and winter Kale / Cabbage.
Also, a selection of different sized orange pumpkins looks really nice sitting here and there, groups or alone.

I hear pansies are a great fall flower. I don't know about for your area though. I live in Oklahoma and we keep them almost all winter, it can get pretty cold here too.

Mums are beautiful, they come in a large varity of colors and they are even pretty in the spring a large ball of green, have fun!

Mum and asters are both good. Dark purple asters look really good with the yellow mums , by the way.
