probably means your drain is clogged try liquid plumber and a plunger or if you can clean the trap (the s shaped pipe under the sink)

The previous answers are good ideas. You problem is a slow running drain. That is why cleaning the drains fixed the problem before. When you are running water into the sink, the water is going in faster that the drain can take it away. Eventually, the lines are filling up and backing up into the drain pipe under the sink. Since this is probably where your dishwasher is connected, the water flows back into the dishwasher since it is the lowest point. If you want the simplest solution, take the flex hose that comes out of the dishwasher and secure it under the top rim of your sink with a pipe clamp or wire. Just make sure that some point of the hose 3-5" higher than the bottom of the sink. The water should now stay in the sink instead of backing up into the dishwasher.

If there isn't a clog in your drain, then your dishwasher drain is in the wrong place. If you have a garbage disposal it should be there, if not it should be near the top of your sink drain about 3"-4" below the sink. If the drain is in the correct location try some Draino foam to unclog your drain. The Drain may be partially clogged allowing water to back up to the Dishwasher drain hose.

You could install a check valve in the drain line from the dishwasher this will keep water from flowing into the dish washer

YOUR D/W DRAIN SHOULD BE HIGHER THAN THE DRAIN OF THE SINK ( ESPECIALLY OLD ONES )... THEY USED TO TO DRILL THE HOLE FROM THE D/W SPACE HIGH SO SINK DRAIN WATER WAS FORCED TO WASTE PIPE... OTHERWISE WATER SEEK THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE!
