Why is it that puting thoughts and feelings on paper or speaking about them to someone instantly makes one feel better? It's not about feed-back, since writing something noone reads or talking to someone that just listens does help... while just thinking about it doesn't do the trick.

With writing, because you feel that you've said what you have to say.

With listening, even if the person "just listens" you get the feeling of being understood -- one of our deepest needs.

(Compare to telling something to someone who doesn't understand; that can hurt, even if they aren't being hurtful about it. Also consider the value so many get from self-help groups; talking about something with people who have been there, or still are there themselves can be very healing -- knowing another human understands you.)

With both, by putting the thoughts into words and in a concrete form, you clarify them. You know better what it is you think and feel by the act of verbalizing.

Also, by listening to yourself and seeing your words on paper, you gain a perspective on the thoughts and feelings.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

The human mind is like a capsule, or a vessel in which to travel,
If left full or sitting still, it's seams begin to unravel,
A vent can release the steam it holds, or simply allow a breath,
A person that tends to bottle things up, is asking for emotional death.
If something is eating away at you, you can adjust..keep it at bay,
In time you'll learn that it is weight, you must lug around each day..
To tell someone about it, is like opening a door...
To allow the cool air of autumn in, as a leaf skids on the floor...
Will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvinated,
Even as tears fall like rain...
The weight you shed will make more room..for pleasantness in your brain.

Because you need to put out whatever it is you are feeling, when you do so, you feel better. it's a factor of someone cares enough to listen to you. also, in a sense, when you're relating all this back to yourself or a friend/family member, your mind re-processes it. it thinks about how it could be better/worse, and makes it possible to work out a solution. it also relieves pressure, like letting excess air out of a beach ball...sometimes, all it takes is a little more, and BLAM.

Because it's like putting down the weight that you've been carrying. By spitting it out lessens the burden.

It is a method of release of stress or buildups of any negative feelings stored inside your heart. like blowing into a brown paper bag it stores up bigger and bigger if without good method of release it will explode. same goes to your mental-health.
