I bought a house a year ago and a guy comes around regularly and checks the electronic water meter on the outside of the house. We got a note from our water company saying they needed to come inside and check the inside meter because the outside meter was not working. Keep in mind, it had been working for a year just fine and they had been billing us monthly about what we used to pay at our previous residence so we thought nothing was out of order. When they checked the inside meter, they said the inside is showing 400,000 gallons more than the outside meter. They said they would bill us for it. We said that we are not paying for that and there is no way we used 400,000 in a month (the last time the meter was read correctly). We do not own a pool or anything like that. They said that we would pay for it or they would shut our water off. This is crazy. Any advise? Obviously if I had the money for a lawyer, I wouldn't worry about the bill.

Go to your county commissioners and explain to them. MAYBE, they will understand. I had an electric company do that to me once. They lost.

If they had not checked the inside meter before, the outside one may have been running incorrectly for months, maybe even before you moved in. Part of that bill may even belong to the previous owners (though it probably became your responsibility when you bought the house). Basically, that 400,000 difference could have been accumulating for more than a month. I would simply ask them to investigate the issue further and see if there were another way to work it out. Try not being an asshole first. If they do not respond as nicely, then you will have to sue them.

Hope you are good friends with the guy next store to you and you have a white garden hose (white is for drinking water).

I don't have quite the same situation, but I'm convinced
our water company is ripping us off, too.
I'm keeping your question on watch list - thanks for asking this.
Hopefully, someone can help.
