It was the first kinda Marxist revolutionary uprising that ever took place, half a century before the October Revolution in Russia that established the first "truly socialist" state. The commune took place mainly in the "red belt" surrounding the bourgeois downtown of Paris, before spreading out and taking effective control of the city in the aftermath of the French defeat against Prussia, so there was also a lot of nationalism going on there as well, cos the Prussians were there shelling Paris, as the new french Assembly had decided to sign a peace treaty accepting their defeat and the eventual lost of Alsace and part of Lorraine to the newly born II German Reich . The commune was finally crushed by military means.
