I'm a firm believer of research. If you question the validity of a story. Do a little research, find out if the facts are accurate. Additionally, you have to always "consider the source". A blog is an opinion based venue. Where as news from CNN, etc writted by an actual reporter may be a different issue. Anything written by an "analyst" is going to have spin attached. Just keep yourself educated, and you have to weed through the spin and research on your own to get real factual information.

Dude, if you are in the US or UK, you have been forcefed fake news for years now. Research Operation/Project Mockingbird and ECHELON. In 2002, Bush, though the Rendon Goup, planted fake news in Australia (as it is illegal to do so here) and let the internet sweep it stateside. The poor reporter was then thrust into the frontlines in Iraq, sans armor, and ended up the first casualty, but I digress. The USG (government) and Media have been in bed for quite some time now. Hence, you probably never knew that some of the "hijackers" have been found alive and well in other countries.

I try to look at several different sources. So called 'alternative' sources as well as mainstream ones. I also speak 4 languages so if I really want to see if the story is at least consistent I'll check what 'Le Monde' 'Il Corriere Della Sera' and 'Dagens Nyheter' are saying. I like google news because they have an algorithm that alternates its sources for different articles from around the world. Gorilla News is interesting but pretty conspiratorial. Salon is good for opinion.
My number one tool is to not trust anything I read, always be the skeptic.

Yes, there are many unreliable sources, but if you can nail down a few consistent ones, you know who to check the other stories/reports against.

I think, despite all the "junk" info one must sort through now days, you are also given the ability to check the facts that much more thoroughly.

I reference the original sources of all the news i blog, so if my facts are wrong then the source is wrong. If the source is wrong then all news is wrong. Before fox news there was only one side to news and it was the liberal side so its been unreliable since day one. I never make stuff up and opinions i hold are base solely on the facts that I'm able to determine are facts.

I am 30. Yes you could check the sources many times but you also had the privilege in your time of truly independent news agencies. Agencies that held the story as the utmost importance, not helping the fat man at the top get fatter. Now all of the major newspapers, news organizations and radio stations are owned by a handful of mega corportations with significant government interests. In order to get news that isn't filtered to protect corporate or government strategic interests, we have to look to our independent news sources and in our day it happens to be blogs, grass-roots internet news sites to name a few.

The lack of alternatives didn't make news of yore more reliable. Remember how the Brits controlled the transAtlantic cable in WWI and used it for propaganda purposes to get us to join them in the war? What about yellow journalism of the late 1800s?

This is funny, flame bait. I wonder what uppity comment the poster will have to say about me?

President Bush ate my unborn children! It was at at the homosexual wedding celebration between Saddam Hussein and Tony Blair. Osama bin Laden was the maid of honor.

Fox News was there to report on it. Of course they never aired it.

Edit: no, you just mock anyone who doesn't agree with you. Can you honestly say that you gave good debate in your replies to BrandX, Darth Dad, and Irish_American_Psycho?

You just dismissed them as morons who don't agree, laugh at their stupidity and move on. To me, that's a pretty good description of a troll. This most certainly is flame bait.

The news was not necessarily more accurate but it was less disputed because other opinions did not come out. Newsmen were trusted more but that does not mean that they were more trustworthy. Granted there is a lot of bull out there that takes on the appearance of news.
