The danger is called hemodilution. This occurs when you drink so much water that you dilute the sodium content of the blood. When this happens, tissues can swell, including the brain. If this water intoxication, as it is called, happens, it can be fatal.
You need only about 2 liters of water a day to meet your needs, and more in hot weather, especially if it is also very dry, like a desert region.
You should alternate one 8 oz bottle of sports drink for every 2 bottles of water you drink during strenuous physical activity in hot weather. (Like bicycling a 50 miles or running a marathon).
People who abuse MDMA (x-tasy) have been known to die from water intoxication because they get locked into repetetive behaviors while high and drink regardless of thirst.
If your pee remains light yellow, and you need to pee about every two hours or so, regardless of activity, you are meeting your water needs.

You can actually drink too much water. In fact, you can get drunk on water. The only thing is that you have to drink a couple gallons before this happens. This was a hot topic in my chemistry class. The professor's son actually tried it and succeeded at it, only to get pulled over and cited with a DUI because he was drunk on water.

just don't force it down.. if you are thirsty then keep drinking it!.. but if you feel full and are trying to force another glass down that's a bad thing... also, if you are peeing every 5 minutes you might cut back some. as for a numerical amount, that will change depending on your body size and type.

More then you'd probably ever drink in a day, I wouldn't worry about it. I drink a lot of water and I'm fine.

You'll start to feel it - it happened to me once. I was nauseus, dizzy and lethargic.

It dilutes the salt in your body too much and you feel crappy.

Wrong! If you drank more water than your body needed, you would just pee it out! How is that harmful?
