Keep playing. Keep getting better. You have to pay your dues. It doesn't matter who you are, you can't get out of that. How bad do you want it? It could take many years. You have to decide who you are. If your a drummer, then be a drummer. Don't worry about the money or fame. If you stick with it long enough, and you end up being good enough, the rest will happen.

The whole concept of "Making it Big" is why so many people move to LA and start a band. It's also why so many people move back to Illinois after they don't "Make it Big". I think that you have to be prepared to not "Make it Big" in order to be sucessfull. How about this, Instead of having "Make it Big" as your goal, why not make it "To Earn a Living"?

There are thousands and thousands of bands out there with more talent than the "popular" bands, like Green Day. But, they have never "been discovered" and now they are playing State Fairs and Hot Rod Shows, instead of Letterman and Leno.

You should be aiming to:
1) Have fun playing with a talented band (this should go without saying)
2) Making enough money to make it worth your time
3) Build a following of loyal fans who will drive to some out of the way place, just to see you and your band
4) Hook up with other bands who have similar goals.

I hate to be negative, and maybe I'll never sell out stadiums like Metallica does because I think this way, but the idea of "Making it Big" is highly unlikely. You are setting yourself up to be let down. You have to do it slowly, and work yourself into a position where you will be happy, even if you don't get your huge record label.

If you want to get work as a drummer you need to practice your butt off. You need to play to a metronome for at LEAST an hour a day in differing styles; you need to study different genres, the rules and feels. if you want to be a session drummer, you should be able to read music. if you just want to be in a band that makes it big, you need to get on the other guys to practice... if the rest of the guys in your band suck, you need to find a different band. find the best singer/songwriter or band you can and work out the best stuff you can.

that's a start.

Because you don't beleive it. You think you aren't good enough or will get in over your head and fail, onstage, spectacularly. I know it;s hard but you just have to get out there and try.
