The first I managed without too much of a promlem but was flumoxed when I came to do downstairs as it is old wiring (different colours) and it is 2 way gang switch. Any advice?

4 wires lead in to the old switch. Red, black, yellow and blue in a vertical line. There is only space for 3 to the new switch and they are placed 1 at the top and 2 at bottom beside each other. Common at top and 1 way and 2 way at bottom. I think US fittings must be different because there is no silver or brass colourings anywhere.

As long as they are single pole switches and not three ways then the wire color is really unimportant. Just be sure to hook the wires to the new switches in the same manner they are attached to the existing switches. You will probably note that the old switch and the new have one wire connected to a brass terminal side and one to a silver terminal. Attache them the same way on the new ones and all will be well. Of course, make sure power is off.

Just copy the way the one you took off was connected.

There's a 1 way switch, a 2 way switch, a 2 gang switch (usually only made as 2 way) But there's no such thing as a 2 way gang switch! What did you mean, 2 way or 2 gang.

You are obviously an amateur and I am pleased that the Government introduced new laws to stop people like you from putting YOUR life and the lives of others at risk. Get a qualified electrician.
