I have a good friend of mine who has a 8 year old girl who came from school asking what a homosexual is. I respect the gay community and thought perhaps to come to you and ask you for an answer. I would be interested in your input.

The reason I am asking this, is because she asked me what I would do, and I wasn't sure what to say. The cat took my tongue at the moment.

I think the best thing to do is be totally truthful with her! I have a 7 year old son and a 4 year old daughter and I do not hide my life from them. My 4 year old asked me if Dora was gay. I asked her what does gay mean to you. She said when a boy turns into a boy turns into a girl. I had to correct her fast! I told her that is not what gay means. I told her that gay means Happy and she asked if I was gay and I said yes. She said is that why I have two moms? I said yes. She said mom I want you to be happy! So they are very aware of what is going around them and they have every right to ask questions about it! If I were you I would explain to her what a homosexual is. You don't really have to break it down totally but give her a general idea and teach her to respect all walk of life as you do! That's my 2 cents :)

You tell her the truth but only the truth she ask for. Her mind is the one that is still developing so start simple. Tell her It is when a man loves a man or a woman loves a woman like mommy loves daddy.
If this is not enough the child will then follow up with what ever is on her mind let the child lead you with the questions. It is OK to say I am not sure or I don't know if you truly do not have a clear answer. It is also perfect ly OK to say why do you want to know before answering any question.
Like the old joke kid ask where I come from and after the parent answers as completely and honestly about the birds and the bees as they can the kid with a shocked look says Oh will Jeff says he is from New Jersey.

Just answer the questions... well homosexuality is a man loving a man and in a relationship. Or a lady and a lady loving each other. and they live together like a man and a woman who love each other would... Then leave it at that unless she asks more questions...

With Kids, I've realized to never over answer anything...

Well at 8 they are old enough for a fairly straightforward explanation. Some people instead of being a family with a mum/mom and a dad, make a family with two mom/mums or two dads. It is two people who love each other and want to be a couple, they just happen to be both women or both men.

Well, you don't need to go into the gritty details. You can just tell her how that sometimes, not all men fall in love with women, and not all women fall in love with men. Sometimes, men fall in love with other men and want to live together in a house and share a bedroom like mommy and daddy do. Sometimes women fall in love with other women and want to live together in a house and share a bedroom like mommy and daddy do. Just keep the conversation simple, but she is probably still too young to know much more than that.

I am straight but my son's god father is gay and when my son was old enough, I just explained that like some ladies fall in love with men and vice versa, sometimes ladies fall in love with ladies and men fall in love with men.
I didn't get into the sex part when he was that age. Only when he asked about the sex part.
Peace

sometimes a woman and a man love each other. other times 2 women love each other and 2 men also. i would teach my kid that all love is beautiful. i would tell my kid that some people won't accept it because they're closed minded and scared of what they dont understand, but when 2 people commit and love each other it's definatelly honorable.

Well honey, just be honest to her and talk to her like an adult (without the adult content). Explain to her that it is when a man loves a man, or woman loves a women just like her mommy love her daddy. Tell that these couples are families just like hers. That they sometimes have children just like her. That she should respect them as people and adults. That God loves them and thier family too.
