There are a few that set a good example. As a broad class, more often than not, athletes are not appropriate role models.
Charles Barkley had it right. Parents and teachers should be the role models. It's pretty hard to have this come to fruition, but it is the right sentiment. People who advance society and contribute should be considered role models.
I would rather have my kids thinking about being astronauts or explorers than toting the rock for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Inevitably, kids idolize people in the spotlight. If the example in question epitomizes hard work, dedication, and is an educated, articulate speaker, you could do worse...

Appropriate for what? You have your choice. Starting with Rae Carruth all the way up to Warrick Dunn. Carruth murdered his girlfriend and Dunn got Man of the Year. Picking them based on their stats is a bad way to select a role model but most kids do, unless their parents guide them in the right direction by explaining what a good model is.

sure! just like T.O, Pete Rose, the Titans guy that stepped on the Radiers guy, Ricky Williams, Dennis Rodman, Ron Artest... the list goes on and on!
but seriously, I think they are decent role models, but it has more to do with their attitude than their playing ability.
