When and why did popcorn become associated with the cinema and how did it get to become common practice for all cinemas to sell it?

In 1885, the first popcorn “machine” was invented. Until then, poppers were made to sit in front of stores to attract attention. But vendors wanted to be close to the crowds — especially the crowds near movie theaters. So poppers were made that could be pushed on foot, pulled by horse or mounted on trucks. Popcorn was very popular from the 1890s until the Great Depression. Street vendors used to follow crowds around, pushing steam- or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks and expositions

I'm not sure "when" but I know "why". It's where they make their money. Extra salty popcorn makes you go for the $4.00 soda that cost them 6 cents.

It's lightweight so people are inclined to buy lots of it without even realising. It's addictive. It makes u thirsty so people will buy drinks as well. And its cheap to produce.
