If you're playing a solo in Jazz (and equally with Bach's Unaccompanied Suites!), it means you have to listen through your inner ear (musical imagination) to what the other instruments would be doing if they were playing - accompanying you. He could also have meant that the notes on the page are only half of the music - there's also what you put into the music of yourself, which is absolutely essential for any musician.

You can't just look at the notes and play them for what they are. You need the feelings behind those notes to truly make the music come alive.
