Our sunflowers were covered with orange and dark brown beetles that looked a lot like lightning bugs this fall. I don't know if they are the same beetle that you are seeing. There are more that a few that look very similar. I found an insect identification wegsite that we use all of the time. It has lots of photos and we have found it easy to identify bugs of all kinds. It is called "bug guide.net". Here is a link to the page that identifies the types of beetles you are describing:

This is the best insect identification site I have found on the internet. I hope you like it too.

Good luck with your search for information.

if they look a little like lady bugs they are asian beetles and are pesky little things. If you swat on a wall they will leave a stain. If they are bigger and flatter, they are most likely box elder bugs. Also pesky buggers and hard to get rid of. They breed in box elder trees. We had so much trouble we finally cut down the trees.

Sounds like Box Elder bugs (they're supposed to be attracted to those kinds of trees). My father in law gets them too - when my husband was little they called them Halloween bugs - because of the time they start showing up and their colors.

I believe they are called boxelder bugs or something like. I think harmless to humans, but don't know what kind of damage they can do to vegetation.
