We got a side job offer to paint a couple's rather large living room. I just don't know what to charge...any suggestions on how to gauge if we are charging to much/to little?

Figure out how many hours it will take you and then charge $30 each per hour. Let them buy the paint.

My best suggestion is to call a professional painter and ask how much he would charge for that sized room. Since you are not a professional, I would charge a third.

I believe this is better advice than a dollar amount, because how much a professional would charge could vary A LOT depending on where you live.

Well, that all depends... Are you painting the ceiling? What kind of ceiling is it... popcorn? textured? etc... Are you painting the rooms corner trim? The baseboards? Window seals? Is there any brick work to trim around near a fireplace? Are you going to have to use drop cloths to protect carpet? Are you rolling or spraying the room? Are you applying primer? How many coats will it take for coverage? All of this is a factor.... But I will tell you this. Regardless of these factors... I would never touch a room for less than $100.00 base price and going up from there.

i know a painter and i believe he charges $1..85 a sq ft. i think most painters charge 2 something a sq ft. maybe you should just call a painter in the phone book and find out how much they charge. do that for a couple of places. then find the cheapest one and do it for a little cheaper. that way if they check around for prices, they'll realize that your a lot cheaper. good luck

I would say 30- 35 an hour would be fair. Make sure you have the skill to do this. Also, make sure that you have a written note that they want you to do this and will not hold you responsible for damages. (I know this is awkward but better to be safe than sorry). Also make sure they choose and buy the paint for you.

Call & get quotes from people in your area, give them the size of the room & see how much they would charge & give a bit lower price.
