I'm due for a trip and I want to stray away from anything too touristy. I've heard a lot of good about Gatlinburg, TN, but I'd rather something smaller scale in terms of people. i.e. I want the scenery, w/o the congestion.

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts, i'll appreciate it. Thanks.

It will be in late November also.

I live in Sevierville TN. It is by Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Don't let anyone fool you. They are both congested with people and t-shirt shops. In November neither one should be too bad though. I would suggest Townsend. It truely is away from it all and you can always come into Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg for the day and go back to Townsend that night. Their slogan is "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies.".

Asheville, NC is a great city, lost of hiking, lots of great places to eat down town, Barley's, Asheville Brew and view, Salsas.

Black Mountain is a quaint little town too.

In Tenessee you have Nasheville and Leapers Fork is East of that about 15- 20 minutes. There is a great antique store and a wonderful Gunsmith Greg who etches the beautiful guns
even if guns are not your thing they are just really neat to see

Bryson City, Franklin, Sylva, Burnsville, Waynesville, and Brevard are all awesome little western NC mountain towns, and Boone is another good option for vacation, as the scenery is unbelievable and accomodations are very reasonable.

I really wouldn't call Gatlinburg congested as long as you avoid the main tourist bit. There are certainly ways to get far away from those main touristy bits.

If you can swing down a bit south... check out Helen, GA... it's setup like an alpine town... really nice and not to bad with congestion in the winter months... Great scenery...

gatlinburg has lots of things to do for example ripleys believe it or not, guiness world record museum, aquarium, christus gardens (so Beautiful) as well as lots of shops. it is very crowded though, i would stay at pigeon forge which is about 10 minutes away. it is less crowded, cheaper and there is a lot to do there as well. if you go to either of these places i highly recommend visiting christus gardens.
