It was very rough on people, but people helped each other out, they made their toys, clothes. The food tasted much better then and the air was so much fresher during the 40's .People had to use ration stamps to get things like gas and butter, etc. clothing of some were made out of feed sacks.Halloween time was fun, they had cake walks, and the beggars would come in the front door and go out the back. Our whole community would gather at the school and they would pass out prizes for the best costumes. It seemed the country was more united.Women had to start working in plants The people of today could not prob. go through what the people did then, as there are so much more technology, and have become spoiled with everyday things, that they take for granted.

really hard times. not enough work. no one was hiring, no one could find a job, land was cheap so you couldn't even sell your land and get anything for it. most people luckily had maybe a cow and chickens and knew how to have a garden so could get a little food that way. many were hungry. lots of 14,15,16 year old boys got kicked out because their parents couldn't feed them and they had to fend for themselves. the air was so dusty that people kept the dishes upside down, you couldn't set the table, there was dust in all the food you did get. the milk "looked" like chocolate milk because there was dust falling in it. people tried to move to find work but there was nothing but more misery. The WPA was a godsend and the men went to work (in distant places).

I recommend you read 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck for a flavour of 30s dustbowl America.
