He's definitely just trying to save his career. If he didn't believe it was true... he wouldn't have said it in the first place.

The truth comes out when you're drunk and he was drunk. He wasn't thinking about the consequences when he started running his mouth.

Such a shame. Such a good actor... gone to waste!

I'm afraid he really has messed up a few times too many, to be able to maintain the levels of respect that Mel once had....

Unfortunately I suspect that the reality is he meant every word, just regrets getting "caught"..... such a pity for such an intelligent man to be so deficient in humanity.

BTW I came accross a joke that I thought was rather fitting for his claim he drank only water all night....

Miracle Mile

A priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped
for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells
alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty
wine bottle on the floor of the car.

He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?"

"Just water," says the priest.

The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?"

The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good
Heavens! HE's done it again!"

***This could possibly explain the Mel Gibson mystery of
how he became drunk while drinking only bottles of water
in the Bar!

i've got self assurance he's sorry for the slur led to via alcohol. I even have self assurance he's sorry he became caught. it may be the final element as he's a self-admitted alcoholic. It has led to him to re-examine the region and get help. i've got self assurance in Mel Gibson as a classic good man or woman. Please bear in mind Alcoholism is a ailment i'm fellow countrywoman of theirs I dont sense that any celebrity from any u . s . a . is given a honest flow an basic citizen would not fee this plenty interest for an analogous element via the media

All three. I think he's kind of surprised that he actually thinks what he said might be true, too. Even if he doesn't, it shows just what kind of influence parents have over their kids since his father has been very verbal about this sort of thing. Remember, that he doesn't really have to save his career since just after his last movie alone, he is a very, very rich man and doesn't ever need to work again. Still, I kind of believe that people tend to say the truth when they are drunk that they may have been holding back while sober.

I don't think he is sorry and he should not have to apologize for telling it like it is. Marlon Brando made similar remarks years ago and they tried to blacklist him also. Anyone who speaks out against the Jewish Hollywood establishment is running a risk. And I respect them for speaking out. They stick together tightly and participate in definite favoritism with other Jews. And it is crap. Even if Gibson was drunk, I would tell him that he did an honorable thing.

I think it's both. He's a public person who's livelyhood depends on the public's opinion of him so it's obvious that he needs to iron things out publicly. Also for people to judge him based on one "stupid" comment is hypocracy. Sadly I've heard many people of many races and religions make prejudicial jokes and comments about people of different races and religions. Yet they consider themselves non-prejudice and not racist. As a Christian and a Mexican I've been offended several times by people who claim to be tolerant and so-called liberal. Although I think that what he said is absolutely wrong I also think that we should all look at ourselves before we judge and condemn him permanently and think about how many times we said stupid things too.

I think that he is sorry for what he has said, if you've ever had a substance abuse problem you can sympathise with what has happened. I'm not trying to defend him or his actions, and i'm not saying that it is any excuse. As a public figure he should have had a better handle on his problems. But give the guy a break, he's appologised and is getting help.

Someone once told me that alcohol is truth serum. You want to know what someone really thinks, gets them drunk. This may not work on everyone, but from my experiences, it seems to be true. So, I don't think he's really sorry, I think he's just sorry everyone knows. And, I really liked him as the person I thought he was up until this point.

He may or may not be sorry, but he shouldn't have to apologize. People say stupid things all the time - get over it. His opinion doesn't really affect anybody other than himself.

I think he's sorry for saying it. Booze brings out irrational behavior in people, and he wouldn't be the first (or last) one to say something he doesn't really mean under its influence. Still, his career is definitely hurt from saying it.

"MEL is going to be channel 11 this thrusday morning, talking with the lady, we all make foolish mistakes, and we aren't famous to make a fool outs of ourselves on national television when we do, know, when I"VE acted badly, feel so bad but thankful there weren't more there to witness my bad behavior, yes I do think he's sorry, and what he did was not right, but I'm not judging him
