First person to realise what he was looking at when he looked at the Milky Way was objects exactly like the Sun but far far away, was the philosopher Democritus (450-370 BC). He also suggested that some of these stars might have planets and some of these planets might have life on them. He also suggested that matter consisted of small indivisible particles called atoms.

Pretty intelligent interpretation of the universe for 2,400 years ago. Beats all the mythology of hunters and bears and heroes who lived in the sky, hands down.

The first person to discover the stars was the one who looked up at the night sky and said -

"Ugh...things in sky. Not hurt eyes like big hurt-eye-thing in sky when can see good. Not big white thing in sky when not can see good. I make small pot out of those ones. I make big one out of those. I make bear in sky! I make hunter in sky to fight bear. I dizzy now."
