A first, philosophy was the search for truth and then THE TRUTH. When it was finally realized there wasn't any such thing, then it became the study of what constitutes reality. It is now the search for what is the common factors that make up reality for everyone.

Figuring out the logic of complex matters. There are other forms of philosophy, but to find solutions by using logic is the most pragmatic form of philosophy in today's society. Other forms are merely brain food for thought.

Philosophy is a field of study in which people question and create theories about the nature of reality. It includes diverse subfields such as aesthetics, epistemology, ontology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, and law. Philosophers ponder such fundamental mysteries as: whether or not God exists, the nature of being, the nature of the universe, and what makes actions right or wrong.

by definition, philosophy means the love of wisdom. In ancient Greece, philosophers were highly regarded and central to the development of their culture. They were the scientists.

nowadays, philosophy is relegated to a much lesser stature. Previous answers give more than adequate descriptions of what it is today.

Philosophy is the study of thought. I think most philsophers begin by noticing that at times they were not in a state of awareness , but that by directing attention to self they raised their own states of awareness and then they began to expound and study this phenomenae and to lay direction to others around themselves.
